and keep those things therein: for the time is at hand

Our Story
In 2001 the newly formed Young Adult Ministry of Concord Baptist was looking for an activity that they could do with their children. Then President Ramona Jones-McClain remembered a stage play that she had performed in college. On February 22, 2002 at the United Baptist Convention headquarters for the state of Maryland, the YAM performed their first Musical stage play “The Colored Museum” by George C. Wolfe. Directed by Aaron Androh and produced by Ramona Jones-McClain. The cast presented three performances to standing room only crowds. In 2003 the second production was “Purlie Victorious” by Ossie Davis in which Luttie Belle was joined on stage by Melba Moore to sing the landmark song “I Got Love”.
By the fall of 2003 after negotiating performance rights for the first two plays and realizing that there were not many African American plays available for church groups; the board of the Young Adult Ministry decided to create a committee that could write their own. In February 2004 at Woodlawn High School they presented the world premiere of “The Music In My Soul” Featuring African American Music of all genres from slavery to Hip Hop. At that time the group began receiving attention from the Baltimore Office of Promotions and the Arts and the Maryland State Arts Council. At their recommendation they were encouraged to seek official recognition as a Regional performance group from the National Endowment of the Arts. After pushing to achieve 501C3 status in May of 2005 they were finally recognized by the National Endowment of the Arts as a regional Theatrical group.
Since that time there have been over 100 members of Excellent Productions. They have performed 72 shows, created 10 new works and 50 original songs. As a regional member of the Screen Actors Guild and the Baltimore Theater Alliance. They have launched the careers of members who are now on Off-Broadway, the Atlanta music industry, Hollywood and the local entertainment scene.
